Festivals in Santorini and throughout Greece often coincide with the outdoors, featuring religious celebrations, along with food, wine, and music. Those associated with saint’s names are usually called ‘Panigiria’ and they are frequent, given the many names celebrated across the country. In Spring

Easter celebrations, either in April or in May, are definitely among the best festivals in Santorini to experience, celebrated grandly as Greece’s most significant holiday, in combination with the coming of Spring. The Panagia Platsani church, known for its historical icon found at sea, hosts reflective Holy Week services. In Pyrgos, the highest village, the Good Friday Epitaph procession is illuminated by traditional “denekedakia” lanterns, offering a unique cultural spectacle. Meanwhile, in Emporeio, the ancient Simantra tradition features a solemn procession with rhythmic sounds calling locals to the evening service, highlighting the village’s rich history and traditions.

July:

The Santorini Jazz Festival is a celebration of jazz in the stunning settings of Santorini. This festival features performances from both renowned international artists and talented emerging musicians.

August:

One of the busiest times of the year, August is full of excitement. The Santorini Wine Festival has been held in August on occasion*, a tribute to the island’s winemaking history, with wine tastings, workshops, and cultural performances, showcasing the best of local wine and cuisine. *Please note that the date of this event varies.

On August 15th, the Diocese of the Virgin Mary’s feast day is celebrated with great fervor across Akrotiri, Firostefani, and many other villages of Santorini. The most significant festivities take place at the Panagia Episkopi church with festivities including religious services and community celebrations with music, dance, and food, marking one of the most significant festivals in Santorini.

September:

There is one festival on the island that is simply unmissable. The Ifestia Festival commemorates Santorini’s volcanic origins with a dramatic re-enactment of the Minoan Eruption, complete with fireworks, music, and cultural exhibitions. Every 15th of September, Santorini (literally) ignites with the vibrant celebration, an homage to the island’s volcanic heritage.
